The original reference by liiuiueus to the lice of horses and asses under the name of Pediculus aiui most certaiidy refers to the common Trk'hodectex infesting these aninmls, but IMaget has reac. A the conclu- sion that this reference is to the form subsequently by (liebel as Trichodevtea piloaua, and that the form described by Denny as equi, and which has since almost universally been tieated as the Linnu^an species, was in reality a different insect from that described by Linnanis under the same name.
