St John’s College, Cambridge - New Buildings

The College was founded in 1511 by Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother of Henry VII, and after her death the executor of her will John Fisher, Bishop of Rochester, ensured the establishment of the College. It is the second largest and also the second richest constituent college of Cambridge University. Its buildings encompass a wide range of architectural styles. Some notable features are the Great Gate on Trinity Street, the College Chapel and the Master’s Lodge (both designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott), the ‘Bridge of Sighs’ across the River Cam and the School of Pythagoras, built in 1200 AD. Its alumni list features many notable politicians including four Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom, Dr Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India and William Wilberforce, MP and campaigner against slavery. Among its nine Nobel Laureates are the physicists, Paul Dirac and Abdus Salaam and the double Nobel Laureate Fredrick Sanger. Other notable alumni are the writer Samuel Butler, the poet William Wordsworth, the photographer Cecil Beaton, the martyr St John Fisher and Charles Oatley, inventor of the scanning electron microscope. Again in terms of distinction the College ranks second only to Trinity College in the University of Cambridge. The engraving shows the new building of St John’s from the garden. The building is in the neo Gothic style and four storeys in height. It was designed by Rickman and Hutchinson and has been nicknamed the Wedding Cake because of its elaborate decorative features. The picture was drawn by F Mackenzie and engraved by J Le Keux
