JOHN ALBION ANDREW Governor of Massachusetts FOREWORD FROM A CONTEMPORARYOF A GROUP OF SOLDIERS OF THEWAR OF 1861 Early in the time of our Civil War a set ofphotographs, of which these are mainly dupli-cates, was sent over to some English friendswho had recently been guests here. Placed ontheir drawing-room table in London, the por-traits helped to convince their friends that ourarmy was not made up of mere mercenaries. To accompany the photographs, short me-moirs have been compiled, from the HarvardMemorial Biographies and from other sources,of Colonel Charles Russell Lowell and some ofhis friends and cousins, with Governor John at their head. There were other friends and cousins whoseservices in the war and since the war equallydeserve recognition, but whose photographswere not at hand when the original collectionwas made: the cousins are Francis L.
