McCain died September 6, 1945 as a vice admiral but was posthumously promoted to admiral the same year by a joint resolution of Congress. He is buried in Section 3 in grave 4356, the same section as his son, Navy Adm. John Sidney “Jack” McCain Jr., who is in grave 4001-A.
