Japan: Takeda Shingen (1 December 1521 - 13 May 1573), Sengoku Period daimyo. Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861), c. 1843-1847. Takeda Shingen of Kai Province, born as Katsuchiyo and formal name Harunobu, was a powerful daimyo in feudal Japan during the late Sengoku period. Called the 'Tiger of Kai', he was a warlord of prodigious skill and tactical nous. Even at a young age, he was ambitious and methodically conquered neighbouring Shinano Province over a period of ten years. He was the only daimyo powerful and skilled enough to stop Oda Nobunaga's plans to rule Japan.
