Cross-Section Through Contact Box a sealed copper shell. The collector shoe was a long cop-per bar attached between the magnet bars and arranged topermit of a vertical movement of 3 in. The magnet coilswere connected in series with the collector shoe. This improved equipment was installed and put in serviceon April 7, 1909, and was in use until June, 1910. Theexperimental line was % mile long and in one month asmany as 1722 trips were made over the line. In the four-teen months of service the only failures were twentybroken carbon contacts caused by the impact of the arma-tures. After considerable experimenting Le Carbonebrushes were adopted, as they were found in perfect condi-tion after a test of more than 300,000 contacts. As the result of this test the Lewisburg & Tyrone branchof the Pennsylvania Railroad, 10 miles long, was equippedwith the system early in 1911 and has been in operationfor the last six months.
