Oral herpes. Clinical view of the inside of a patient's mouth, with lesions on the soft palate indicating the presence of intra-oral herpes. Also known as herpetic stomatitis, this is an infection with the Herpes simplex (cold sore) virus. The infection is contagious and spreads by direct contact with the blisters or their fluid. There are two types of herpes simplex virus, with HSV1 causing infections of the nose, mouth and face. Fillings are present in the upper rear molars.
