Vladimir Zworykin (1889-1982), Russian engineer. Zworykin is famous for his development of a combined photoelectric cell and thermionic valve (seen here) that led to the development of the electronic scanning television. Here, the photoelectric cell is the upper part of the device, and the thermionic valve is the lower part. Zworykin spent the First World War as a radio officer in the Russian Army. He emigrated to the USA in 1919 and joined the Westinghouse Corporation. He carried out his work on his device in 1923, and it had been developed into the first electrical television by 1929.
