Central galvanization is also a valuable methodin many neurasthenic conditions, in hysteria, and in cases of illustrate in Fig. 51 the process which has given us most satisfaction. The hair being thoroughly wet, a light wire-gauze helmet, lined with THE DOSAGE OF ELECTRICITY. 237 some soft, conducting material, is fitted as accurately as possible to thehead. To this is attached the positive pole, while the negative is appliedto the pit of the stomach, and a current passed, varying according to thedisease and individual idiosyncrasies, from five to forty milliamperes. It may seem an easy thing to make use of central galvanization satis-factorily, but, like most easy things, its efficient use demands knowledge, care, and some experience, all of which are within reach of those who de-sire to utilize the method. The wide area which this helmet-electrodecovers lessens by just so much the resistance to be overcome, and enables. To this end, however, the electrode must be made toadjust itself accurately to every inequality of surface, otherwise a painfulconcentration of current will be felt at various points, and the efficacy ofthe applications interfered with. Any discussion of the subject of electric dosage would be incompletewithout reference to gynecology, in which electricity has accomplishedmuch good. Here, more than in any other department of medicine, is il-lustrated the great superiority of strong and comparatively short, overweak and prolonged applications. As this matter, however, is sufficiently 238 ELECTRO-THERAPEUTICS. considered in the chapter devoted to diseases of women, it need not be dis-cussed here.
