Thaksin Shinawatra is a politician and businessman and was Prime Minister of Thailand from 2001 to 2006, when he was deposed in a coup for allegedly abusing his power for personal gain. He founded the mobile phone operator Advanced Info Service as well as the Shin Corporation, making him one of the richest people in Thailand. Thaksin won a landslide electoral victory in 2001, becoming the first democratically elected prime minister to serve a full term.
