The tops of these mountains are so high thatthey are lost in the clouds, and are frequently coveredby thick exhalations or smoke that ascends from air of this island is extremely wholesome. It iswell furnished with flesh and fowl; and the sea on itscoasts abounds with all sorts of fish. The finest ebonyin the world grows here. It is a tall, straight tree ofa moderate thickness, covered with a green bark, verythick, under which the wood is as black as pitch, andas close as ivory.
