The course of the diseaseis slower than in cancer of the cervix, and extension takes place, firstly,into the substance of the uterine wall, and secondly, by a lymphatic CARCINOMA OF THE ENDOMETRIUM 99 spread to the lumbar glands in front of the aorta which drain the lymphfrom the body of the uterus (tig. OS). Intension to the cervix or extremely rare. As a result of the growth in the interior, the uterusheroines enlarged, hut it very seldom attains a size bigger than a twomonths pregnancy. If the patient be past the menopause, the uterusmay he actually smaller than normal. Clinical Phenomena—Etiology.—The disease usually arises at orafter the time of the menopause. It may occur either in nulliparous orinultiparous women, probably more frequently
