The candle of illumina-tion may be taken to represent the Protestant faith,and by depicting his countryman with his backturned upon the luminous point Beza would seemto indicate that, knowing the true faith, this manfailed to profit by his knowledge or to conformhis public conduct to his private creed. That isthe reading of the symbolism that commends itselfto the most recent biographer of Michel deIHopital—Mr. Atkinson, of Oxford (1900)—and there seems no reason to call in question 184
