The cork grove of Tuscania, central Italy.

This is a grove of cork oak (Quercus suber), in the protected area of the town of Tuscania, in central Italy. It is an area of great natural interest and is a typical example of mature cork wood (one of the most ancient and best preserved in Lazio). The underbrush is marked by a splendid flowering of wild orchids and other plants such as asphodel, morning glory and wild asparagus. The cork oak is an evergreen tree. In the Mediterranean basin the bark is stripped off at intervals of several years and sold for the manufacture of corks and insulation material.
