Thegreat-grandmother of our subject, on thefathers side, was a Miss Kalb, an Aus-trian from Bregenz. The mother ofBishop Messmer was Rosa Baumgartner,a native of Moerschwyl, Canton of Switzerland. Shf died in the primeof life, highly esteemed for her many goodqualities of head and heart. Bishop Messmer is the eldest in afamily of six children. He received hisprimary education in the common schools.
