This is the old capital of Laos and exudes remote tranquillity and casual grandeur. Situated in a slim valley shaded by green mountains and the Mekong and Khan rivers, this tiny mountain kingdom has been in existence for more than a thousand years and was designated a World Heritage Site in 1995. Louang Prabang is endowed with a legacy of ancient red-roofed temples and French-Indochinese architecture, not to mention some of the country's most refined cuisine, its richest culture and its most sacred Buddha image, the Pha Bang. The heritage of Theravada Buddhist temples, French-Indochinese houses and royal mystique lend Laos an allure unmatched by any other city in Laos.
