. The organ works of Bach. hardly suggest the Bach we know. But the variations as a whole show a grace andpolish quite remarkable in an age when the keyboardidiom was still far from defined. They might have been written in Bachsmaturity :. m s/T\ HS^ ?± M^^. poco fit. J ^ ^g S^= The final variation gives us an ad libitum pedalpart which needs treating with discretion. Itconsists of the chorale melody in crotchets. Butas the left hand gives us an ornamental form ofthe tune in the bass, the pedal part, unless playedwith very quiet i6-ft. tone alone (uncoupled, of CHORALE VARIATIONS 7 course) merely muddles the effect. Played on thepedals attached to the harpsichord the pedal notesquickly ceased sounding, and little or no damagewas done. On the whole, the pedal part is bestomitted. Certainly the use of Pedal 32-, 16-, and8-ft. with reeds coupled to Great (as is suggestedby some editors), seems indefensible, unless thelower of the left-hand parts is omitted. Here isthe first phrase of this variation : ¥^ I?~4.: -^^ Sg -JoMzJ Xr. ^^P Man. g1. -fr^-y Ped. {ad lib.).
