Ethiopian deforestation. Silhouette of a woman carrying firewood gathered in a rural area of Ethiopia. Increasing population in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa as a whole has led to rising pressures on natural resources. This includes clearing forests for farming and firewood. This deforestation is causing increased soil erosion in the rainy season, when deep ravines are formed on the mountainsides. This process ultimately leads to the farmland becoming barren deserts. Uncontrolled wood-cutting is forbidden, so gathering is done at nightfall. Photographed in the area around Midagdo Valley and Taganey Mountain, Ethiopia.
