Rev. Jesse Jackson (Jesse Louis Jackson Sr.) During his campaign in 1988 to become the Democratic party candidate in the 1988 United States presidential election. Jackson is known as a civil rights activist, Baptist Minister and politician who served as the shadow Senator for the District of Columbia from 1991 to 1997. In 1983 when Jackson first campaigned for the presidency, he became the second African American, after Shirley Chisholm in 1972, to mount a nationwide campaign for president as a Democrat. Michael Dukakis won the Democratic nomination and was defeated by the Republican candidate George Bush in the 88 election.
