Pons Asinorum!, 1877. Artist: Joseph Swain

Pons Asinorum!, 1877. The European Powers, including the German and Russian Emperors on the left and right respectively of Britain's John Bull, are unable to move on the Eastern Question, being weighed down by Protocol. However, on the top of Protocol is the heavily armed Russian Bear, the Protocol acting as a bridge for Russia to declare war on Turkey. This relates to the Protocol on Turkish affairs that was signed at the end of March at the Foreign Office in London. The European Powers were supposed to be acting in the interests of the Christian population in the east, and should there be any threat to this population then the Powers reserved the right to take joint action. From Punch, or the London Charivari, March 24, 1877.
