There are three points which afford the readiest access to the hills:— Madras on the eastern coast; Calicut, Cannanore, and Tellicherry, on thewestern. The two latter have several advantages ; they are by more than halfnearer than Madras ; they presuppose a sea-voyage of at least a few days, iffrom the opposite coast, probably of some weeks, which is of the utmost utilityin preparing invalids of most classes for the great change of climate in ascend-ing the hills; indeed, in many cases, it may be expected that they will assistmaterially in eradicating the seeds of the disease, necessitating the change,and leave nothing for the European climate to do but to confirm theamendment.
