This rare band of colours forms when the sun is very high in the sky, higher than 58 degrees. A circumhorizontal arc is a very large halo that is always parallel to the ground. This example was photographed in September 2016, over a unit at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) site, operated by the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Chile.
