An old engraving of Hallidie’s 1873 wire-rope railway in San Francisco, California, USA. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. Andrew Smith Hallidie (1836 –1900) was the promoter of the Clay Street Hill Railroad in San Francisco, the world's first practical cable car system. Hallidie is often regarded as the inventor of the cable car and father of the present day San Francisco cable car system. The Clay Street line started regular service in 1873 and was a financial success. Hallidie's patents on the cable car design made him a rich man.

Hallidie is often regarded as the inventor of the cable car and father of the present day San Francisco cable car system. He also introduced the manufacture of wire rope to California, and was a builder of bridges in the state. The named engineer of the Clay Street system was William Eppelsheimer. However, Hallidie's previous experience of cable haulage systems make it likely that he contributed to its design. The Clay Street line started regular service in 1873 and was a financial success. Hallidie's patents on the cable car design made him a rich man. The Clay Street Hill Railroad became a part of the San Francisco cable car network but none of the original line survives.
