Bach y Graig Farm, Bachegraig, Tremerchion, St Asaph, Denbighshire, Farm buildings, part of the earliest brick-built house in Wales. Erected 1567

Bach y Graig Farm, Bachegraig, Tremerchion, St Asaph, Denbighshire, Originally ‘Bachegraig’, the earliest brick-built house in Wales. Erected 1567 by Sir Richard Clough, 2nd husband of Katharine of Berain. Clough, was a Denbigh man and rich merchant in Antwerp (Flanders) who helped found the London Royal Exchange. The Antwerp-style ‘prodigy house’ ’had a ‘towering pyramid roof with tiered windows & soaring chimneys’ was built by Flemish craftsmen in Flemish bricks - its alien looks caused it to be attributed to the Devil. The main house was demolished 1817 but farm buildings remain, the gatehouse-cum-warehouse serving as the farmhouse. Dr Johnson’s friend 'Mrs Thrale' (Hester Lynch Piozzi of Brynbella), grew up here: when she, her 1st husband & Johnson visited in 1774 the house was dilapidated.
