During the Vietnam war, photographer Sgt. 2. F. Burch captured an image of Pfc Larry Jones from Chicago, Ill., holding his damaged hard hat. The hat had deflected an incoming 82mm North Vietnamese mortar round during Operation Fravie, which took place three miles south of the demilitarized zone. The incident occurred in 1966.
