Cutaneous leishmaniasis lesions. Close-up of infected lesions on the arm of a middle-aged Syrian refugee woman from Aleppo. Known by a wide variety of names, this disease is the skin form of a protozoan parasite infection transmitted by the bites of Phlebotomus sandflies. The protozoa are of the Trypanosomatida order, usually the Leishmania genus. Raised, red lesions develop that can become infected with bacteria.
