Historic Brown Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church AME Church in Selma, Alabama

This church was the starting point for the Selma to Montgomery marches in March 1965. It was the meeting place and offices of the SCLC, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference during the Selma Movement, and played a major role in the events that led to the adoption of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The nation's reaction to Selma's "Bloody Sunday" march on March 7th 1965 is widely credited with making the passage of the Voting Rights Act politically viable in the United States Congress. There are various monuments commemorating the Civil Rights Struggle in the South in front of the church including a bronze bust of Dr. Martin Luther King (visible).
