Smallpox virus, glass sculpture. British artist Luke Jerram holding his glass smallpox virus sculpture. This scultpure was designed in consultation with virologists and created in collaboration with glass blowers. It features a transparent outer layer, which represents the outer membrane of the virus, and an opaque inner section, which represents the protein nucleocapsid where DNA is stored. Smaller globular structures protruding from the outer layer represent surface proteins.
