He was one ofnatures noblemen, and not one of the large circle whoshared his friendship will ever forget his genial ways andwarm heart. Lieutenant-Commander James CrossanQiaplin married Martha Harris, and they were the par-ents of Virginia S., James Crossan, of whom further,and Mary C. James Crossan Chaplin, son of James Crossan (i) andMartha (Harris) Chaplin, was born in Pittsburgh, , 1863. His fathers death occurred when he was threeyears of age,-and Missouri then became the family home;. BIOGRAPHICAL 305 but in 1879 they returned to Pittsburgh, making theirresidence in Sewickley. Then, as a youth of sixteenyears, he obtained a position in the Citizens NationalBank, resigning from that service to become teller withthe Fidelity Title and Trust Company. The ten yearsof his continuance with this company witnessed his ad-vancement to the office of treasurer, and upon the in-corporation of the Colonial Trust Company of Pitts-burgh, he became vice-president of the new qualifications of the highest grade, and unusualpowers of leadership have brought him into prominentplace in the financial, industrial, and commercial world,and he has been called to advisory and administrativepositions in connection with many enterprises of largeimportance.
