The nasalj or medial surface (fades nasalis) forms a part of thelateral wall of the nasal fossa. It exhibits the nasal notch, in front, the lacrimal groove, above, and along the posterior margin the ptery-gopalatine groove, which becomes a canal upon articulation (for theposterior palatine nerve and the great palatine artery). Near theupper and back part of this surface is the opening into the maxillarysinus which is smaller in the articulated skull. The sinus is pyra-midal in shape (as is the body) and communicates with the middlemeatus of the nasal fossa. Its walls, the surfaces of the body, arefor the most part thin, especially over the sockets of the teeth. In 62 OSTEOLOGY the recent state it is lined with a mucous membrane
