Berlin Wilmersdorf. Heidelberger Platz S-Bahn railway station with covered platform is on the Ringbahn (Circle Line) and services the S41 And S42 Line. The original Ringbahn station servicing steam trains opened on 15 December 1883 as the Schmargendorf station. Between 1890 and 1892 the neo-Romanesque style reception building was added with a connecting passage to the central Platform. The electric trains came into service in 1928. The station survived the Second World War without damage but after the construction of the Berlin Wall the passenger numbers decreased and revenue fell. Staff experienced longer working hours and dissatisfaction resulted in a strike in September 1980. The buildings were neglected and only the reception building was renovated in 1980. It was damaged by fire shortly thereafter and a further refurbishment was necessary. A nightclub moved into the building after the second refurbishment. In 1989 after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Ringbahn was recommissioned and the route was slowly re-instated. The S-Bahn station was moved under Mecklenburgische Strasse with an entrance on the south side of the street. On the northern side, the staircase led to the platform from the street without diverting people through a reception hall. The station reopened on December 17 1993, with the new name Heidelberger Platz
