The Eternal Light Peace Memorial is a Gettysburg Battlefield monument on Oak Hill commemorating the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg. The natural gas flame in a one ton bronze urn is atop a tower on a stone terrace with views from the summit over about 400 sq mi / 1000 km2. The flame is visible from 20 miles (32 km) away. The 47,5 ft / 15m tall monument is built of Alabama limestone and Maine granite, topped by a natural gas torch lit eternally symbolizing the unity of the United States. First plans date from 1887, it was completed in 1938 for the 75th anniversary reunion and dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Architect: Paul Philippe Cret. There are 1,320 monuments on the former Gettysburg Battlefield. The Eternal Light Peace Memorial or Peace Light or Peace Flame is one of the most popular.
