Pizhichil - an ayurvedic application where warm oil from the hands of two therapists is simultaneously poured over the body in rhythmic streams. Pizhichil is used in panchakarma treatment, to melt lymphatic blockages and release toxins to be later flushed out - at the Kovilakam Lake Resort. India's 5000 year old health discipline, Ayurveda is in the midst of a renaissance. Spurred on by the recent boom in spa tourism, ayurvedic applications can now be found almost everywhere; from a beach resort in Mexico to the shelves of the Body Shop. But it is in Kerala where the real renaissance is happening, a plethora of plush ayurvedic resorts catering for foreigners recently opening their doors. But offering short courses, and some cutting corners, purists feel these resorts are jeopardising ayurveda's authenticity. Kovilakam is one of many resorts offering the discipline that have recently been built along the shores of Lake Vembanad, India's largest freshwater lake and protected bird sanctuary.
