Portrait Detail of a Tyrrhenian Wall Lizard (Podarcis tiliguerta) Basking on a Granite Rock, Baia Sardinia, Sardinia, Italy.

Close up, head and shoulders detail, of a Tyrrhenian Wall Lizard (Podarcis tiliguerta) basking on a boulder. These cute lizards, one of two species only found in Sardinia and Corsica, inhabit scrub and rocky areas. The female lays a clutch of between six and twelve eggs. They are fast and timid but their charming disposition whilst basking in the sun allows for a relatively close appreciation. There is some evidence that once common, some populations have decreased in a few areas. Perhaps this is due to predators or over collection by herpetile enthusiasts. This animal was one of many seen in Baia Sardinia in Northern Sardinia, Italy.
