Autumn birches in Creagellachie Nature Reserve Aviemore Inverness-shire Scotland UK
Immediately to the west of Aviemore, behind the A9 bypass, stands the height of Craigellachie (490m), itself an outlier of Carn Dearg Mor about two miles away. The lower slopes of Craigellachie are liberally cloaked in natural birchwood, and it's in this area that the Craigellachie Nature Reserve has been designated. Craigellachie includes several woodland trails, a viewpoint balcony, and a couple of picturesque lochans. It's a fair bet that few of Aviemore's visitors are even aware that Craigellachie exists, but those who are curious and who wander through the sinister corrugated iron tunnel under the A9 find a quiet world of natural forest with rewarding views across Aviemore towards the Cairngorms. Aviemore is a town and tourist resort, situated within the Cairngorms National Park in the Highlands of Scotland. It is in the Badenoch and Strathspey committee area, within the Highland council area. Prior to 1890 it was in an exclave of the county of Moray and from 1890 to 1975 it was in the county of Inverness-shire, until the latter date being within the Civil Parish of Duthil and Rothiemurchus. The town is popular for skiing and other winter sports, and for hill-walking in the Cairngorm Mountains. The village was transformed in the 1960s by large developments for the tourist industry. The Aviemore Centre was opened by Lady Fraser of Allander in 1966.
