It is not a little remarkable that this fish should have so long remained unknown, as it is stated by its describer "to be common in every lake and river from Canada to the northern extremity of the ; Whether this includes the great lakes above the Falls of Niagara, it is not stated, although the language would authorise that interpretation; no distinct mention is made of it, however, as having been taken south of the Mingan River, which empties into the estuary of St. Lawrence somewhere about the latitude of 50°; all the other specimens described being taken in Winter Lake, or in the waters of Boothia Felix; it is scarcely possible, however, but that it must.
