The suggestion that the Arts andCrafts Society should be allowed the use of theAcademy galleries was originally made as far backas 1888 at the first Congress, held at Liverpool, ofthe National Association for the Advancement ofArt and its application to Industry. The Liverpoolmeeting was held in December, and as the firstexhibition of the Arts and Crafts Society had beenopened a few weeks earlier at the New Gallery,Leighton as President of the Congress referred toit in his opening address, and admitted that themen by whom it was promoted had already donemuch to improve and elevate the taste of thecommunity.
