CARMA LEIGH 1 CARMA LEIGH The retirement of Carma Leigh, California State Librarian, on July1, 1972, ends a chapter in a long and distinguished career of service toCalifornia libraries and to the profession at large. Mrs. Leigh (then Carma Russell Zimmerman) was appointed StateLibrarian by Governor Earl Warren on September 12, 1951, and wassubsequently reappointed by Governors Knight, Brown, and library career had begun in 1930 at the Berkeley Public Library;from there she moved to the head librarianships of the WatsonvillePublic Library (1931-35), Orange County Library (1938-42), and SanBernardino County Library (1942-45). From 1945 to 1951, she wasWashington State Librarian. Mrs. Leighs activities have been international in scope. In 1952 sheparticipated in a study of public libraries in West Germany and WestBerlin, and in 1969 she served as Consultant to the State Library ofVictoria, Australia. She toured Russia as a delegate to the Int
