A visit from Captain Moonlight, County Mayo, Ireland, Circa 1870, Vigilante reprisals against profiteering landlords
Illustration from Cassell's Century Edition History of England, pub circa 1901. Depicting Agrarian terrorism, vigilante reprisals against profiteering landlords, before the passing of the Landlord and Tenant (Ireland) Act 1870. Though the act was widely seen as ineffectual after its passing. Captain Moonlight was a clandestine name used by an earlier secret Irish agrarian organisation in 18th-century Ireland called the Whiteboys, and adopted to hide the identities of 19th century vigilantes.
