Intestinal villi, pill camera view. The villi are small projections from the folds of the intestinal wall, which give the folds a hairy appearance here. They serve to greatly increase the surface area of the small intestine, which helps its primary function of absorbing nutrients. Each villus is likewise covered in thousands of microscopic microvilli, which increases the surface area yet more. A pill camera is a pill- sized camera that is swallowed to image the digestive tract.
