Facial plastic surgery

Illustration of the first stage of surgery carried out during the First World War on soldiers whose faces had been ripped of by shelling. An incision is made near the cheeks, on each side of the absent mouth, and flaps of skin folded in to the centre on the lower part of the missing mouth, then sewn together in the middle, reconstituting the lip and the deep part of the epiderm on the chin.
