Eucalyptus bark. Naturally peeling bark on the trunk of a \stringybark\" tree, Eucalyptus obliqua. Bark forms the protective and tough outer sheath of the trunk and branches of trees and woody shrubs. Eucalyptus species (family: Myrtaceae), many of which are known as gum trees, form the predominant vegetation in Australian forests. The ragged bark is typical. Species known as stringybarks have a fibrous inner bark, including the peppermint trees. Eucalyptus trees are used for timber, and extracts from their bark are used in the manufacture of various dyes and drugs. Photographed in Tasmania."
