Inorder to obtain an efficiency of 72 percent it is also necessary that the boilerhave competent supervision. The aver-age small steam plant boiler operatesbelow 50 per cent efficiency. However, the greatest heat loss of thesteam power plant occurs in the engine, auxiliaries and piping after the steamleaves the boiler. These heat losses in agood condensing engine plant are aboutas follows: Main engine exhaust 57 % or 7980 B. T. U. Main engine radiation 2 % or 280 B. T. U. Auxiliaries (when exhaust feed water heater is used) or 210 B. T. U. Piping 2 % or 280 B. T. U. Total % or 8750 B. T. U. With the 28 per
