Bruce, CompanyK, and one other, now unknown. Col. Walter Gustin Bartholomew, son of Abiel and Sarah Gustin Bartholomew, was bornat Colchester, Conn., June 26, 1826. His educationaladvantages were confined to the district schools. August,1849, he enlisted in the U. S. Engineer Corps, servedfive years in Company A, Sappers and Miners, at WestPoint Military Academy, and was discharged as a corporaat the expiration of his term of enlistment. After hisdischarge he located at Springfield, Mass., and was em-ployed in Thompsons Express Office until the opening. t J ■J . I Colonel Walter G. Bartholomew. COLONEL WALTER G. Eegr., he was commissioned captain, with assignmentto the North Adams company (H), which he soon broughtto such perfection as to distance competition. He was as-signed the post of honor, — the right of the regiment, —a position justly deserved, and unanimously accorded to himOn the resignation of Maj. William M. Brown, Dec. 6,1861, he was promoted to fill the vacancy: and May 2l\1863, upon the resignation of Lieut. Col. Luke Lvnian,was commissioned lieutenant-colonel. He was discharged a*lieutenant-colonel June 26, 1665, but for conspicuous andmeritorious service, was brevetted colonel. Col.
