This piece, when complete, as well as TheMask of Comus, was represented in private at the Palace ofthe Count. The actors and singers were the author and hisfriends, and the orchestra of the first Italian opera consistedonly of four instruments, namely, a pianoforte, a harp, a vio-loncello, and a lute. There were no airs in this opera, andthe recitative, if such it could be called, was nothing morethan a species of measured intonation, which would at thepresent time be thought very monotonous and fatiguing.
