The photograph was taken just before the rebuilding of the shop front in 1929. Beatties was founded in Victoria Street in 1877 by James Beattie. It was originally known as the 'Victoria Draper Supply Store'. By 1895, the firm employed a staff of 40 and had an annual turnover of £30,000. During the early 1920s the company adopted limited liability, becoming James Beattie Ltd. In 1954, the firm offered the sale of shares to the public, making it a Public Limited Company (PLC) and the company name changed to James Beattie PLC. The company was taken over by House of Fraser in 2005.
