Computer image showing a simplified illustration of genetic relationships shared in a family. The coloured depressions are based on the bands of DNA produced by the technique of electrophoresis in an agarose gel, known as an autoradiograph. The pattern of these DNA bands is unique to each individual, but some bands are shared by related people, such as a parent & child. DNA fingerprints can be used to prove conclusively whether people are related. The illustration shows elements of each parental DNA band randomly shared by their children. Both children share some bands with each parent, proving that they are indeed related. The blank children each side of the family group do not share genetic material and are therefore unrelated.
