Thisleft a large gap on our left flank, which theyhad formerly occupied, and the Germans imme-diately took advantage of this and closed in onus, cutting U3 off before we realized that the92nd had fallen back. We were in that trap September 28th, 29thand 30th, and were reunited with the rest of thedivision on October 1st. On the night of Octo-ber 2nd the battalion was again caught in an-other trap, which lasted for a period of sixdays and nights. It is needless to say that themen suffered greatly during these periods. During the day of October 2nd, Company A(of which I v/as a member) v/as badly cut up. while taking a small hill, and during the attackwe lost 90 men in less than 30 minutes 40 members of the company, includingmyself, were sent back by Major Whittlesey toestablish posts of communication and to act asstretcher bearers, as men v^ere being woundedfaster than they could be handled. Eighteen ofthe company remained with the Major and werecaught in the second trap. We fought desperately during those six days, going Over the Top as often as three timesin one day. That you may have some idea ofthe cost of the ground taken in those ArgonneWoods, can give you the facts of my own com-pany of which I have an intimate went Over the Top on the morning ofSeptember 26th with 250 men, and on the nightof October 15th there v/ere only 44 of us fol-lowing Major Whittlesey out of the front lines tothe second lines of support near Grand Pre.
