The situation grew so promisingthat about 9 I ordered a general charge along the v/holeline. This was promptly made, and the enemy were drivento the east of Marsh Run, and complete success seemed as-sured, when a large force of the enemy again appeared on myleft in the direction of Middletown. The charge had to besuspended and combinations made to meet the new battle still raged with great fury, my line being fre-quently compelled to change front to meet the flank a portion of it faced northward, another eastward,and another southward.
