Sunny portrait, looking west from below, Great Northern and Cornbrook Viaducts crossing Castlefield Canal Basin, Manchester, UK

The Canal Basin at Castlefield, Manchester, is crossed by four large railway viaducts. The southern viaduct in the group (out of sight left of shot) is the red brick viaduct of the Manchester South Junction and Altrincham Railway built in 1849. A m span cast iron bridge takes the viaduct across the basin. On the left side of the shot the 1877 Cornbrook Viaduct, a red bricks, wrought iron truss girder construction, was deemed to be in better condition than the Great Northern Viaduct, so was chosen for refurbishment in 1990-91 and is currently used by Metrolink trams going to Altrincham. In the centre of the shot, stands the tubular steel Great Northern Viaduct, dating to 1894, and now disused. A view beneath the Cornbrook and Great Northern Viaducts, from the east side of the basin.
